A TRIBUTE TO CORINNE BAILEY RAE :
The first time I heard Corinne Bailey Rae was in 2006 late one night watching VH1. It was the music video for ‘Put your records on’. I remember wanting to infuse the feeling of hope and self-acceptance into my Senior Collection but didn’t know how to do it. It was conceptual and I was more of a literal designer. I printed out the lyrics of her songs and pictures of her as my mood board, hoping to translate them into fashion design. I loved her authenticity and have always been inspired by people with that quality. Music and words still inspire my work today.
Congratulations on the 15-year anniversary of your first album lady! In the summer of 2007, my boyfriend (now husband 😊 ) surprised me with her CD (yes, the actual physical CD) by turning on the car radio and starting to play the CD. At first, I was amazed that my favorite song ‘Put your records on’ came on as soon as he turned on the radio, (coincidence I thought) but once the 2nd song started, I caught on that he had bought me the CD. This was early in the dating game so, he got some major points for that surprise 😊 .
I will forever have great memories when I think of this first album. I’m really looking forward to listening to it on vinyl (once I have a record player!)
