PORTRAITS OF FAVORITE FEMALE SINGERS/ SONGWRITERS :
Late one night, I fell down the rabbit hole of Youtube and came across Natalia Lafourcade. Listening to her sing in the middle of the night, when it was so quiet, was magical. There is a moment at the end of her music video where its just the clapping and her voice singing above the sound, as she dances around the room, wrapped up in the pure joy of music, dance and camaraderie with those around her. I love this moment, because it reminds of my late grandmother’s love of life, of latin music and people coming together to sing and dance. She loved it and I could see her in Natalia’s movements and her smile.
Song : Tu Si Sabes quererme
Artist : Natalia Lafourcade
Album : Musas
I get a little bit teary eyed whenever I hear this song, because, although it is about the unconditional love of someone who sees beyond your flaws, which is amazing and makes you feel happy, it also reminds me of my grandmother and I get homesick for Christmas time and celebrating with family and neighbors while singing songs in Spanish. Latin music has always been a love of mine ever since I took Latin dance classes as a teenager. Nothing lifts my mood as it does when you mix rhythm and movement (blame it on my Latin roots). You just can’t listen to her music without moving your feet!
